Cutting the fabric for our new asymetrical

And we chose black?

News Release. Monday 10th November 2003
TeamJackal commissions new Asymetrical Spinnaker from
Quantum Sail Design Group
TeamJackal have announced the commission of a new spinnaker for their campaign over the coming series of races. The Quantum J80 AP Spinnaker measures out to be largest class spinnaker on the market today, and will provide the team with a highly competetive edge on both downwind and broad reaching courses, delivering power across a variety of conditions.
The sail is an asymetrical type, flown from a retractable bowsprit in classic 'sport-boat' configuration. Designed, using Quantum Sail Design Group's proprietary software, especially for windward/leeward courses, Quantum spinnakers rotate to windward quickly allowing deeper sailing in lighter wind. Constructed of .6 Superkote nylon; the 'top of the line' nylon fabric by Contender Sailcloth, the sail has a softer feel than Quantum's popular AIRX fabric and is available in all colours including jet black - the colour chosen by TeamJackal!.
Andy Taylor, TeamJackal downwind trimmer, comments: "We felt that black really was ideal. After all, we race in the Middle East where black is a firm favourite amongst the best dressed ladies of society... We race with a highly strung, thoroughbred lady, Jackal I mean - none of the crew - so this was a logical choice!"
"We had a good look at colour issues, but realised that we've never seen a black spinnaker. It will be quite a sight out on the water, together with our Quantum Pentex Fusion sails which are grey. It may create a stir amongst our competitors, but colour is only image: This sail represents the pinnacle of downwind sail design. The cut and construction offered by Quantum are second to none, and we look forward to improving our down-wind performance by a huge factor." Nicholas Lunn, the team's helmsman, explains.
Scott Nixon, of Quantum East Coast adds, "John Kolius just finished 2nd last week with our J80 AP Spinnaker at the J80 Worlds in Texas. Quantum makes sails for many of the world's prominent one design classes. In each class where we offer sails, our championship sailors and designers have worked together to produce the sails and tuning system necessary to produce world class speed."
"Building off what we learned after winning the North Americans we have been improving and refining not only the shapes of our sails but the cloth we use. This constant evolution and attention to detail assures our J 80 clients of the fastest sails."
TeamJackal is confident that the new sail will provide a competetive gain on both downwind and reaching course legs, and looks forward to a delivery in late November by Aramex, their new team sponsors.
